Dániel Prinz, Senior Research Economist and Country Programme Manager for Ethiopia at the IFS and TaxDev, was awarded an Honourable Mention by the 2022 John Heinz Dissertation Award.

The John Heinz Dissertation Award is issued annually with support from Teresa Heinz and the Heinz Family Foundation. The award honours the legacy of Senator John Heinz, a founding advisor of the National Academy of Social Insurance and an advocate for healthcare reform and social insurance. The Academy is a non-profit, non-partisan organization made up of the USA's leading experts on social insurance. Its mission is to advance solutions to challenges facing the nation by increasing public understanding of how social insurance contributes to economic security.

Daniel's dissertation, “Essays on Social Insurance," focuses on the economics of social insurance programmes in the US. His papers look at the role employers plays in their employees’ use of disability insurance benefits, elderly Americans’ ability to pay for prescriptions, and the connection between unemployment benefit use and lockdown measures.

“I was surprised to receive the honourable mention for the Heinz Dissertation Award!” Prinz commented. “It’s a great honour, particularly looking at the distinguished set of researchers who received the award and the honourable mention in previous years. I look forward to continuing my research on equity and efficiency in social insurance programs around the world.”
