On June 2nd and 3rd, 2025, the Tax Policy Division (TPD) of Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Finance, in collaboration with the TaxDev programme, hosted a two-day introductory training on tax policy in Abuja.
The workshop convened more than twenty TPD staff members, with the goal of strengthening their foundational understanding of tax policy and enhancing their capacity for evidenced-based policy analysis and decision-making.
Delivered by experts from TaxDev, the sessions covered key topics essential for effective tax governance. Participants explored the objectives of taxation, the range of taxes currently implemented in Nigeria, and core economic concepts relevant to fiscal policy. The training also covered principles of sound tax design, tax progressivity, and offered an overview of Nigeria's existing tax system.
To foster practical understanding, the training combined in-depth presentations with interactive discussions and group exercises, promoting active engagement and applied learning.
This training marks a vital step in building a technically proficient and responsive tax policy unit capable of supporting evidence-driven reforms in Nigeria – especially as implementations plans for the recently approved tax policy reforms move forward.
